Several things: where were you traveling?!? (Of course, I would LOVE to read about your food adventures there. But I do understand thinking and writing about meals changes the experience.) And where can I read the articles you wrote? AND, as usual, I love reading your sub stack, Jonathan! Loved you walking around with judginess, loved the light through the translucent plums, loved the same plums shivering into juice with each bite. Such a gift!
Thank you, Meredith! We were in Strasbourg and Paris for 11 days, but it wasn't an eating trip (frankly, the food in Strasbourg was meh). Unless you count pastries and cheese, which we both gorged ourselves on. Someday, it would be great to catch up person-to-person!
I AGREE! I do have dear friends I can stay with in Portland, so it IS a distinct possibility. (Frankly, the food in Paris can be meh indeed, especially if you're traveling on a budget. I used to stay in Strasbourg-St. Denis with dear friends, on a street CHOKED with restaurants, including a couple with reputations...not deserved, I found out. Real French cooking has more-or-less disappeared; it's all turn-over cooking now (turn over a piece of meat, a piece of fish, a sausage. Oy vey!)
Come north! I'm still in a restaurant-burnout phase, so we didn't really make an effort to go anyplace grand, so that's kind of on me. It may be telling that, aside from a lovely 4-hour dinner cooked by friends, my favorite meals were at Lebanese and Tunisian places.
Beautiful post. Do you happen to know the botanical name of the golden plum? I remember eating them from my great-aunt's tree in Beaverton in the late 70s/early 80s and I'm trying to track that down.
Hehehe your posts make my day, dear friend! Hugs!
PS: By "such a gift," I meant TWO things: your gift for writing, and the gift I received in my emails this morning! Thanks.
